This Bible House stands as a beacon of hope, light, and love that flows from God’s Word. It reflects the unwavering commitment of the Aizawl Auxiliary, the BSI Central Office, and the wider Christian community. We thank God for God’s Word, the source of life, revealed to us through the Holy Scriptures.

The programme commenced at 10:30 AM. The new Bible House was officially inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram, Elder Lalduhoma. This was followed by the unveiling of the commemorative plaque by Rev. Dr. Leelavathi Vemuri, BSI President.

This was followed by the Translation Project Report, presented by Elder Vanlaltlana, leading to the official release of the Mizo Revised Version (New Testament and Psalms), Diglot with English Standard Version, which was made available for the public. The first Aizawl Auxiliary Secretary Rev Ronghinglova was felicitated by the General Secretary with a Shawl and a BSI Memento. Rev. It was a blessing to meet dedicated friends, well-wishers, church leaders, and colleagues from both the Central Office and the Aizawl Auxiliary. As part of the Aizawl visit, the Auxiliary also organised a day outing for our BSI Board Members, Executive Members, and IBSTA members to various tourist destinations, including Falkawn – the Living Museum, Lalsavunga Park, and Aizawl Peak. It was a refreshing and enriching experience, offering a wonderful glimpse of the rich Mizo culture beautifully intertwined with the scenic beauty of the land. We thank God for this memorable time of fellowship and joy.

The visit to the Presbyterian Church leaders at the Mizoram Synod Office, Mission Veng, Aizawl, was especially meaningful. They reaffirmed their strong support and continuous commitment to the BSI ministry. Similarly, the meetings with church leaders, supporters, volunteers, well-wishers, friends and families in both Lunglei and Aizawl were deeply encouraging and uplifting.

A Light in Her Hands: A Story of Little Meera

A Nine-year-old girl Meera sat on the front step of her small house, watching the evening sky turn gold. The Advent season had begun in her church, and every week her Sunday School teacher spoke about preparing our hearts to welcome Jesus. Meera tried her best, she helped her mother sweep the yard, she sang hymns softly while doing chores, and she even tried to be patient with her little brother.

But there was one prayer she kept close to her heart:
“Lord Jesus, I want to know You more. I wish I had a Bible of my own.”

Her family could not afford one, and she had been borrowing the old, faded church copy for months. She never complained, but she hoped – quietly, faithfully.

One cool and breezy November afternoon, the Bible Society of India held a small Scripture distribution event in her village church. People gathered with curiosity, children ran around the courtyard, and colourful Bibles were arranged neatly on a wooden table. Meera stood at a distance, her eyes fixed on a bright, sky-blue children’s Bible with a picture of Jesus holding children.

She whispered again, “Lord… maybe someday.”

Just then, Rev. Thomas, the pastor, called her name.
“Meera, come here,” he said kindly. “We have something for you.”

In that moment, everything became quiet in Meera’s heart. She stepped forward slowly, her hands trembling slightly. The pastor picked up the blue Bible—the very one she had been looking at—and placed it gently into her hands.

“This is a gift from the Bible Society of India,” he said. “May God’s Word be your light.”

Meera clutched the Bible to her chest. It felt warm, almost alive. The gold-edged pages shimmered in the soft sunlight as she opened it for the first time. Her eyes filled with tears—not of sadness, but of a joy so pure that even the breeze seemed to pause and listen.

Walking home, she held the Bible close, as if carrying a treasure that could never be replaced. Everything around her looked different—the trees, the dusty path, even the sky. She felt as though Jesus Himself was walking beside her, smiling at her joy.

That night, Meera placed the Bible under her pillow. She ran her tiny fingers over the cover and whispered a prayer she would never forget:

“Jesus, thank You for coming into the world. And thank You for coming into my heart in this beautiful way.”

From that day on, every page she read felt like another lantern lit on her path—guiding her, comforting her, and preparing her to welcome Christ not just at Christmas, but every single day.

For Meera, the gift of the Bible was more than a book.
It was the beginning of a lifelong journey with Jesus—
a journey illuminated by the love and ministry of the Bible Society of India.

As we enter the Advent season of 2025, we once again step into a sacred time of expectation, hope, and deep reflection. Advent invites us to pause from the hurried rhythm of life and prepare our hearts to welcome the greatest gift the world has ever known that is Jesus Christ, the Light who shines in our darkness.

This holy season gently calls us to reflect on our own readiness. Are our hearts open to receive God’s peace? Are our homes filled with joy? Are our lives marked by love for one another? Advent is not merely a countdown to Christmas; it is a spiritual journey that leads us from longing to fulfillment, from waiting to wonder, from promise to praise.

As we look back on the year 2025, we are grateful for God’s unfailing guidance and abundant blessings. Through seasons of challenge and moments of grace, the Lord has walked with us. As individuals, families, churches, and as the Bible Society of India family, we have experienced God’s faithfulness every step of the way. For this, we lift our hearts in thanksgiving.

May this Advent season renew our commitment to carry God’s Word into every corner of our nation. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, may we also prepare room for Christ in our daily lives through acts of kindness, reconciliation, generosity, and love.

Let us journey through Advent with anticipation and humility, confident that Emmanuel, God with us continues to dwell among God’s people. May God’s peace, joy and love quiet our fears, strengthen our spirits, and move us to serve one another with compassion and bring the greatest Joy to many children

Wishing you a blessed Advent filled with hope, peace, joy, and love as we prepare our hearts for Christmas like little Meera.

FUNDRAISING FOR BIBLE MINISTRY AND ITS SPIRITUALITY

Fundraising for Bible ministry is not merely an exercise in securing resources; it is a sacred task rooted in the mission of God. At its heart, it is about enabling the Word of God to reach lives, communities, and nations that hunger for the Scriptures. Beyond financial strategies and campaign models, there lies a deeper spiritual dimension: the recognition that God is the ultimate provider and that human beings are invited to participate as faithful stewards in God’s mission.

This article explores the spirituality of fundraising for Bible ministry, examining its biblical foundations, the role of stewardship, the call to partnership, and the transformative power it has for both givers and receivers.

  1. The Biblical Foundation of Fundraising

Fundraising is not a modern invention but has deep roots in Scripture. In the Old Testament, God often called His people to give freely and generously for the work of His kingdom. For example, when Moses called the Israelites to contribute toward the building of the tabernacle (Exodus 35:20–29), the people brought their offerings so abundantly that Moses eventually had to restrain them from giving more. Their generosity was an act of worship, expressing their gratitude to God for His deliverance and covenant love.

Similarly, in the New Testament, Paul encouraged the early churches to give for the needs of others. His appeal to the Corinthians to contribute for the church in Jerusalem (2 Corinthians 8–9) reveals important principles: giving is an act of grace, generosity reflects God’s abundance, and cheerful giving glorifies God. Fundraising, therefore, is not about asking money but about inviting God’s people into the joy of participating in God’s mission.

In the context of Bible ministry, these principles remain relevant. When we call upon Christians to support the translation, printing, distribution, and engagement of the Scriptures, we are standing in the biblical tradition of inviting God’s people to invest in something eternal, which is the Word that gives life.

  1. Fundraising as a Spiritual Discipline

Henri J. M. Nouwen, in his classic work The Spirituality of Fundraising, (Upper Room Books, 2011) reminds us that fundraising is first and foremost a form of ministry. It is not a strategy for sustaining institutions but a way of proclaiming vision and inviting others to be part of God’s work. This perspective, certainly transforms how we approach fundraising.

For those engaged in Bible ministry, fundraising is more than preparing proposals or asking for donations; it is an act of faith and prayer. It begins with listening to God, seeking God’s guidance for the mission and trusting God’s provision. The fundraiser becomes a spiritual leader, inviting others into the story of what God is doing through God’s Word.

This spiritual discipline has two dimensions: dependence on God and openness to others. Dependence on God means acknowledging that every resource belongs to God and that God alone moves hearts to give. Openness to others means respecting donors as partners in ministry, not as mere financiers. We approach them with humility and transparency, offering them the opportunity to experience the joy of generosity.

  1. Stewardship and Responsibility

A central theme in the spirituality of fundraising is stewardship. All that we have -time, talents, and treasures comes from God. As stewards, we are called to manage these resources faithfully for God’s purposes. This includes the stewardship of the Bible itself, ensuring that it reaches people in their heart languages, relevant to their cultures, and life situations.

For all the Bible societies, churches, and Christian organizations engaged in Scripture ministry, fundraising must always be tied to accountability and integrity. Donors are giving to the mission of God. Therefore, how funds are used becomes a matter of spiritual responsibility. Transparent reporting, wise management, and ethical practices are not merely organizational requirements; they are spiritual commitments that honor God and build trust.

Stewardship also calls for creativity. Fundraising for Bible ministry should explore diverse avenues: individual donations, church partnerships, institutional grants, digital campaigns, and legacy giving. Yet, regardless of the method, the focus remains the same: stewarding resources to ensure that the Word of God continues to transform lives.

  1. Partnership in Mission

Fundraising for Bible ministry is not a one-sided appeal for resources but a mutual partnership in God’s mission. The Apostle Paul often spoke of the believers as “partners” in God’s ministry (Philippians 1:5). This partnership was not only financial but also spiritual, as donors shared in the blessings and fruits of the mission.

When Bible societies or ministries approach individuals and churches for support, they are essentially saying: Come and join us in bringing God’s Word to those who long for it. Donors, in turn, are given the privilege of being part of God’s mission without leaving their homes or workplaces. Their giving becomes a way of extending the kingdom of God into places they may never personally visit.

Such partnership also requires nurturing. Donors must be cared for through prayer, communication, and genuine relationships. When organizations only see donors as “sources of funds,” they reduce the relationship to a transaction. But when they see them as co-workers in Christ, fundraising becomes a ministry of encouragement, thanksgiving, and mutual growth.

  1. The Transformative Power of Generosity

Fundraising for Bible ministry is not just about meeting needs; it is also about transforming lives, both those who give and those who receive.

For the recipients, access to the Bible in their own language is life-changing. It brings hope, guidance, comfort, and transformation. Countless testimonies affirm how the Scriptures lead people to faith in Christ, sustain them in suffering, and inspire them toward community renewal. Behind every Bible distributed stands a donor whose generosity made it possible.

For the donors, generosity also has a spiritual impact. Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). By giving, Christians grow in trust, detachment from material possessions, and joy in participating in God’s mission. They learn that true wealth lies not in accumulation but in sharing. In this sense, fundraising is an invitation to spiritual growth, for the giver as much as for the receiver.

  1. Challenges and Opportunities

Fundraising for Bible ministry is not without challenges. In many contexts, financial constraints, donor fatigue, and competing priorities can make it difficult to sustain support. Additionally, economic crises or cultural shifts may affect giving patterns.

Yet these challenges can become opportunities for deeper faith. Scarcity can lead to greater dependence on God and innovation in methods. It can also encourage the global body of Christ to practice solidarity, with those in resource-rich contexts supporting those in need. Moreover, new technologies, such as online giving platforms and digital storytelling, provide fresh avenues to connect donors with the impact of their giving.

The key lies in keeping the focus on mission and spirituality. Fundraising must never become detached from the vision of Scripture engagement and transformation. When the appeal is grounded in God’s Word and mission, it resonates more deeply than any technical strategy.

  1. A Holy Calling

Fundraising for Bible ministry is ultimately a holy calling. It is about aligning human resources with God’s purposes, inviting others into the joy of generosity, and ensuring that God’s Word continues to reach the ends of the earth. Its spirituality lies in its reliance on God, its emphasis on stewardship, its fostering of partnership, and its transformative impact on givers and receivers alike.

In a world where many see fundraising merely as a business transaction, the Bible ministry offers a different vision – fundraising as ministry, fundraising as proclamation, fundraising as worship. As churches, Bible societies, and individuals engage in this sacred task, may they always remember the words of the Psalmist: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). All resources belong to God, and when offered back to God, they become instruments of God’s kingdom, carrying God’s Word to every tribe, tongue, and nation. In a nutshell, fundraising for the Bible cause serves as a vital instrument in fulfilling the mission of “God’s Word for God’s World.”

PATMOS INITIATIVE

The Patmos Initiative: Scripture Engagement Forum 2025 – Hope for Minority Christian Communities

On September 16 – 18, the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) in partnership with the United Bible Societies (UBS), and graciously hosted by the Ceylon Bible Society, brought together nearly 50 participants from across the Asia-Pacific region and the Mauritius Bible Society in Colombo. This three-day Scripture Engagement Programme was part of the ongoing global research known as The Patmos Initiative. Inspired by the Apostle John’s vision on the island of Patmos, the initiative seeks to discern how God’s Word can reach and transform lives in today’s complex and challenging world.

The Global Vision

The Patmos Initiative looks at the world through seven global contexts, each presenting its own challenges and opportunities for engaging people with the Scriptures. The Colombo consultation focused on Cluster 6, a context where Christians are a minority surrounded by diverse and often dominant religious traditions. Such as Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism.

The Colombo Experience

The sessions were more than academic deliberations. They were moments of deep sharing, prayer, and vision casting. Participants listened to stories of resilience and hope from Bible Societies working faithfully in minority settings. There was a genuine sense of solidarity that though scattered across nations, participants are united by the same calling to share the life-giving Word of God.

Practical methods were explored: from using Scripture in interfaith dialogue, to building bridges through community projects, to nurturing young believers in environments where faith is fragile.

Key Learnings

Scripture in Minority Spaces: The Bible continues to be a source of courage, healing, and identity for Christians who often feel invisible in their societies.

Power of Partnership: Working together across Bible Societies, churches, and local communities is essential to make a lasting impact.

Digital Frontiers: The consultation acknowledged the urgent need to embrace digital platforms and emerging technologies, not only to reach younger generations but also to ensure access for those isolated in remote or restricted environments.

AI Perspectives: Thought-provoking discussions explored, with much caution how artificial intelligence tools can assist in Bible translation, Scripture engagement, and contextual ministry, while also raising important ethical questions about faith, authenticity, and safeguarding the message of God’s Word.

Encouragement to Persevere: Participants left with renewed determination, knowing they are not alone but part of a global family standing with them.

A Journey of Hope

The Colombo gathering was a reminder that God’s Word cannot be silenced, even in the most challenging environments. Just as the Apostle John received the Revelation on Patmos in exile, today’s minority Christian communities continue to encounter the living Christ through the Scriptures. The Patmos Initiative is more than a research project, it is a movement of hope, equipping Bible Societies to engage hearts with Scripture in ways that bring transformation, resilience, and unity in Christ. Much communication and project sharing will continue across the globe.

BSI Bimonthly E-NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2025-2nd Edition

Scripture Engagement is not merely about reading the Bible; it is about allowing God’s Word to shape one’s heart, character, and conduct. It is one of the most powerful tools for teaching Christian ethical behaviour, grounding individuals and communities in values that reflect the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The Bible, treasured by millions across the globe, holds within it timeless wisdom. At the heart of this wisdom is the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 – 7), where Jesus sets forth a radical vision for life built on humility, mercy, forgiveness, justice, and love.

In this Sermon, Jesus calls His followers to go beyond mere observance of Mosaic law for the Jews, and for modern days communities, any other religious law or the law of the land into the deeper realm of transformed living. He blesses the poor in spirit, the meek, the peacemakers; He commands love for enemies, integrity in speech, and generosity without self-seeking. These teachings are not only central to Christian discipleship but have also echoed powerfully through the ages, inspiring moral leaders and reformers across diverse faiths and traditions.

Famous Christian Writers Engaging with Jesus’ Ethical teachings:

Dietrich Bonhoeffer emphasized discipleship as costly obedience. In The Cost of Discipleship, (in German in 1937 under the title Nachfolge), the English translation by R.H. Fuller was first released in 1948) he reflects on Jesus’ call to ethical living, arguing that grace demands moral action: following Christ means standing for truth and justice even at personal cost.

C.S. Lewis, in works like Mere Christianity (originally broadcast as a series of BBC radio talks between 1941 and 1944 during World War II. These talks were later compiled and published as a book in 1952. The first edition (published by Geoffrey Bles in London), explored the practical dimensions of Christ’s ethics, highlighting love, humility, and moral integrity. He insisted that Christian living is not about abstract ideals but a transformation of character and choices in daily life.

N.T. Wright focuses on the social and communal implications of Jesus’ ethics. In Jesus and the Victory of God (1996 by Fortress Press), he interprets the Sermon on the Mount as a call to embody God’s justice and mercy in society, stressing that ethical living must address both personal and communal transformation.

John Stott in The Message of the Sermon on the Mount (1978 by Inter Varsity Press (IVP)) underscores Jesus’ radical moral vision: He calls believers to authenticity, non-violence, reconciliation, and active love for others, showing that ethical teaching is inseparable from practical discipleship.

These reflections demonstrate that Scripture Engagement is more than study. It is a guide for ethical transformation. Through prayerful reading and meditation on Jesus’ teachings, believers are equipped to embody values that bring personal integrity, social justice, and compassionate living to the world.

Jesus’ Ethical Influence Beyond Christianity

The ethical teachings of Jesus, particularly from the Sermon on the Mount, have had a profound impact that transcends religious boundaries. They have spoken to the conscience of humanity, drawing admiration and even imitation from leaders of other faiths who recognised in them a vision for peace and justice.

Mahatma Gandhi (Hinduism): Gandhi drew deep inspiration from Jesus’ call to non-violence and love for enemies. Reflecting on the Sermon on the Mount, he said, “The message of Jesus, as I understand it, is contained in his Sermon on the Mount unadulterated and taken as a whole … If then I had to face only the Sermon on the Mount and my own interpretation of it, I should not hesitate to say, ‘Oh, yes, I am a Christian.’”. (Young India on 8 December 1927. Gandhi’s philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence), which became the backbone of India’s freedom struggle, was inseparably linked to Christ’s ethical vision.

Rabindranath Tagore (Hindu background): Tagore admired Christ’s spirit of self-sacrifice and universal love. While rooted in the Indian tradition, he recognised the liberating force of Christ’s ethics and saw in Him a light for all humanity, beyond the confines of religion.

Leo Tolstoy (Russian Orthodox reformer): Tolstoy was captivated by Jesus’ command to resist evil with good. His classic work The Kingdom of God is Within You (The first English translation appeared in 1894, translated by Constance Garnett, and was published in London by The International Publishing Company) was a radical interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount, calling for love, non-violence, and simplicity as the basis of social transformation. His writings, in turn, influenced both Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Dalai Lama (Buddhism): The Dalai Lama has openly acknowledged Jesus’ ethical depth, reflecting on Christ – Jesus Christ lived a life of humility, simplicity and service to others. That is something Buddhists greatly admire. For him, Christ’s compassion mirrors the highest ideals of Buddhism. Dalai Lama’s thought is very much reflected in his books – The Book of Joy, The Art of Happiness, and An Open Heart.

Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Muslim): (Known as the Frontier Gandhi) He was a devout Muslim and a champion of non-violence. Inspired both by the Prophet Muhammad and by Christ’s teachings, he once remarked, “There is nothing surprising in a Muslim or a Pathan like me subscribing to the creed of nonviolence… ever since that day, it has been followed by Jesus Christ to this day.”

A Universal Call for Transformation

These voices reveal that Scripture Engagement does not stop within the Christian circle alone and the message of Jesus Christ is not confined to Christianity. His words have transcended boundaries of culture, language, and religion, offering humanity a vision of life grounded in love, justice, and reconciliation. The Sermon on the Mount, one of the greatest teachings in human history continues to challenge individuals and societies, pointing to an alternative way of living rooted not in power or domination, but in humility, forgiveness, and peace.

Our world is fractured by violence, dishonesty, greed, and division. The ethical teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, offers a radical alternative – love for enemies, truthfulness, forgiveness, humility, and justice with mercy. Scripture Engagement is not just reading the Bible but living it, allowing God’s Word to shape our behaviour and transform society.

The need of the hour is clear: Christians must embody Scripture as salt and light in the world. Leaders across faiths from Gandhi to the Dalai Lama have drawn from Christ’s vision of peace and compassion. If we live out these teachings, the Church can once again be a beacon of truth, justice, and love, bringing hope to families, communities, and nations.

TRIBAL AND ADIVASI DAY

THE BIBLE SOCIETY OF INDIA OBSERVES TRIBAL AND ADIVASI DAY ON AUGUST 8, 2025

The Bible Society of India (BSI) commemorates Tribal and Adivasi Day each year on a date closest to August 9, aligning with the International Indigenous Day. The observance follows or adapts the Order of Worship prepared by the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI).This year, the theme was:“Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Self-Determination: A Pathway for Food Security and Sovereignty.”

All 16 Auxiliaries and the Translation Centre in Shillong observed the day in their respective offices. At the Central Office in Bangalore, staff joined with the Karnataka Auxiliary for a special service at the BSI William Carey Centre, Hall Road. The guest speaker was Rev. Dr. Prof. Lalfakawma Ralte, faculty at the United Theological College. Rev. Dr. Ralte delivered a powerful message highlighting how geopolitics and the greed of capitalist industrialists threaten the self-determination, food security, and sovereignty of indigenous peoples in India. He cited examples such as the Vedanta Group’s attempt to mine bauxite from the sacred Niyamgiri Hills in Odisha, land belonging to the Khond Tribe, and also spoke on the ongoing geopolitical crises in Northeast India, which endanger the natural habitat and traditional agricultural systems of local tribes. These realities, he emphasized, strip indigenous communities of their ecosystems and food sustainability within their own territories.

Drawing from the parable of The Great Banquet (Luke 14:15–24) and the biblical vision of justice, peace, and dignity in Micah 4:4, Rev. Dr. Ralte urged the need to uphold justice for indigenous peoples worldwide. The worship service concluded with a Tea Fellowship, where participants continued meaningful conversations on indigenous rights and dignity.
