Pentecost: Empowered to Witness, Called to Serve

How do we understand and celebrate Pentecost, especially as the world observed it on May 24, 2026, just a Sunday behind us? Is Pentecost merely an annual event, or is it an ongoing experience in the life of a believer?

Pentecost is both. It is indeed a specific moment in the Church calendar, remembered each year as the day when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the early disciples. This historical event marked the birth of the Church and the beginning of its mission in the world. As such, it is right and meaningful that believers across the globe come together annually to remember and celebrate this powerful moment. Yet Pentecost is far more than a one-time or once-a-year observance. It is a living and continuous reality. The coming of the Holy Spirit was not limited to that single day, it inaugurated an ongoing fellowship between God and God’s people. The same Spirit who descended at Pentecost continues to dwell within believers today, guiding, empowering, and transforming lives daily.

Therefore, celebrating Pentecost is not only about looking back in remembrance, but also about living forward in the Spirit. It calls us into a daily relationship with the Holy Spirit, walking in His guidance, being renewed by His presence, and participating in His mission. It is in this continuous fellowship that we find strength, courage, wisdom, and purpose. Pentecost stands as one of the most transformative moments in the life of the Church. Recorded in Acts 2, it marks the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, empowering them to boldly proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. What began as a small gathering of believers in an upper room became a global movement that continues to shape lives, communities, and nations.

At Pentecost, the disciples experienced not only a divine encounter but also a divine commissioning. The coming of the Holy Spirit was accompanied by wind and fire, symbols of God’s presence and power. Fear was replaced with courage, confusion with clarity, and silence with proclamation. Ordinary men and women became extraordinary witnesses, declaring God’s Word in languages understood by people from diverse backgrounds. This powerful moment reminds us that the Gospel is for all people, across cultures and languages. For those of us engaged in the ministry of the Bible Society of India (BSI), Pentecost holds deep and practical significance, it is not merely a one-time event in history. Each day, the Pentecost event of over two thousand years ago reminds us that the work of Bible translation, publication, and distribution is far more than an organizational task; it is a Spirit-led mission, guiding us every hour and every day. Just as the Holy Spirit enabled the early disciples to communicate effectively across barriers, so too the Spirit continues to guide and empower our mission, making the Scriptures accessible and understandable to every heart and every language community.

Pentecost also calls us to personal reflection. The same Spirit who empowered the early Church is actively at work in us today. Are we open to the leading of the Holy Spirit? Are we willing to step out in faith, to speak the truth with boldness, and to serve with humility? The Spirit equips each believer with gifts, not for personal gain, but for the building up of the body of Christ and for reaching out to the world in love. In today’s world, where divisions of language, culture, and understanding continue to persist, the message of Pentecost is more relevant than ever. It calls us to unity in diversity, to communication that builds bridges rather than barriers, and to a mission that embraces all people. It brings courage to the fearful, strength to those worn down by hardship and suffering, and dignity and identity to the displaced and those who have lost hope. As the Bible Society of India continues its ministry across the nation’s rich linguistic and cultural landscape, Pentecost reminds us that God’s Word transcends every boundary, speaking life, hope, and transformation to all and for everyday people like you and me!

Let this Pentecost renew our commitment to the mission entrusted to us. May we be filled afresh with the Holy Spirit, empowered to share the Scriptures, inspired to serve with compassion, and united in our calling to bring God’s Word to every corner of our nation.

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8)

May this promise continue to guide and strengthen the ministry of BSI, as we faithfully participate in God’s mission.

ALLAHABAD AUXILIARY

A Historic United Bible Sunday in Allahabad Auxiliary

The Allahabad Auxiliary of the Bible Society of India (BSI) prayerfully and successfully observed United Bible Sunday on 17th May 2026 across ten churches in the city, marking a historic milestone in its ministry. This first-ever united celebration brought together congregations in a spirit of fellowship and shared commitment to the Word of God. Bible Sunday services were conducted in prominent churches including St. Paul’s Church, All Saints Cathedral, St. John’s Church, Naini Community Church, Jamuna Church, Holy Trinity Church, ABC Church, ABS Church, Katra Church, and Methodist Church. Through these gatherings, believers from diverse backgrounds united to celebrate and promote the Holy Scriptures.

The services, held in both Hindi and English, were deeply inspiring and spiritually enriching. They carried the timeless message of God’s Word, strengthening and encouraging believers while reminding the Church of the transformative power of Scripture in today’s world. The success of the event was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Auxiliary staff. With great enthusiasm and commitment, team members travelled to different church locations—some by train and others by office vehicle—ensuring the smooth and effective conduct of the outreach. Their service reflected a shared passion for making the Word of God accessible to all.

Adding to the impact of the celebration, attractive Bible book stalls and Scripture displays were set up in several churches. These displays drew significant attention from congregations, encouraging many to engage more deeply with the Scriptures and support the ministry. The response from church members was both heartening and uplifting. This united observance not only strengthened the bond between the Church and the Bible Society ministry but also stood as a powerful testimony of partnership in spreading God’s Word. A special time of fellowship was shared over lunch with Rt. Rev. Morris Dan, Bishop of CNI Lucknow Diocese, and Rev. Dr. Vinita E., Principal of Girls’ High School, Allahabad. Their presence and words of encouragement added great joy and blessing to the occasion.

The entire programme was marked by gratitude, unity, and spiritual renewal, making this first United Bible Sunday a truly memorable and blessed experience for the Allahabad Auxiliary. Above all, we give all glory and thanksgiving to Almighty God for His grace, travelling mercies, protection, and abundant blessings upon every church, speaker, volunteer, staff member, and congregation who contributed to the success of this meaningful outreach ministry.

TAMIL NADU AUXILIARY

Opening of BSI Branch Office Room and Mary Jones Women’s Fellowship Club Centre, Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu

With hearts full of gratitude to God for His grace and guidance, the Tamil Nadu Auxiliary of the Bible Society of India witnessed two significant and joyous occasions on May 25, 2026, at Nagercoil.

In the afternoon, the Branch Office Room for Kulasekaram Branch was formally inaugurated by Rev. P. Moses Devadason, Senior Auxiliary Secretary, Tamil Nadu Auxiliary. The opening ceremony was marked by prayer, thanksgiving, and fellowship, acknowledging God’s faithfulness in enabling the establishment of this office space, which will serve as a center for strengthening the ministry and outreach of the branch.

Later in the evening, another milestone was celebrated with the opening of the BSI Mary Jones Women’s Fellowship Club Centre for Mulukodu Branch. This special occasion highlighted the vibrant ministry of the Mary Jones Women’s Fellowship, whose dedication and commitment continue to play a vital role in the mission of the Bible Society. The new centre will provide a meaningful space for fellowship, prayer, Scripture engagement, and community service.

We humbly thank God for His abundant blessings upon both these initiatives. Our sincere appreciation goes to the branch leaders, whose vision and leadership made these developments possible. We also extend heartfelt thanks to the Mary Jones Women’s Fellowship leaders and members for their tireless and faithful service, and unwavering support. May these new spaces be used for God’s glory, nurturing faith, strengthening fellowship, and advancing the mission of making the Word of God accessible to all.

American Bible Society Celebrating 210 Years of Ministry.

On May 11, we celebrate 210 years of ministry at American Bible Society—a milestone made possible through God’s unwavering provision and our faithful partners. 

What began as a bold vision to see God’s Word translated into every language for every nation has grown far beyond what our founders imagined. From translation and Scripture distribution to Bible-based trauma healing programs and Bible-centered resources for the digital age, God has continually expanded this work as part of a movement to help people both access the Bible and truly encounter him through it. 

“For the past 210 years, we’ve helped people encounter the life-changing Word of God by making the Bible accessible to all,” says Jennifer Holloran, president and CEO of American Bible Society. “God doesn’t need us to accomplish his plan, but he chooses us to partner with him in it! As we continue this legacy, we each have a beautiful opportunity to point people to Christ and equip them with his Word. This is our part in God’s story!”  

This mission has guided our ministry for more than two centuries and continues to shape where we’re headed next. That’s why, as we celebrate the last 210 years, we’re not only reflecting on all God has done, but we’re also committing to where he is calling us today. 

Breaking Down Barriers to God’s Word 

For more than two centuries, American Bible Society has been about one thing: getting God’s Word to people who need it. That was true in 1816, and it remains true today. 

However, for much of the world, language and access to a physical Bible are no longer the primary barriers to building a meaningful relationship with God. You’ve likely seen this firsthand. Your friend, walking through the pain of a divorce, struggles to hear the comfort found in God’s Word. Your relative dismisses the Bible as outdated and irrelevant to modern life. Your child, caught up in the pressures of college, relationships, and future plans, seems too distracted to engage with its wisdom. These challenges—and many others—often keep people from clearly hearing and responding to the truth of Scripture. As a result, many miss the opportunity to meet Jesus through his Word. 

But we know something powerful: when God meets people where they are, through a Bible in the language and format that works for them, they aren’t just reading words, they’re encountering the Author. And an encounter with God changes everything! 

So, as we look ahead, we are refining our focus to fit our world today and become even more effective in the mission we share with believers and other Bible societies around the world. We’re building on what has always been true: God uses Scripture to transform lives by his Spirit, and everyone deserves the opportunity to experience that. This means a renewed commitment to innovation, to listening and learning, and to deeper partnership with the church so we can meet people with the Bible right where they are, in ways that speak to the realities they face every day. 

God Isn’t Finished Yet! 

God is still at work through American Bible Society because he’s at work in believers like you. And we don’t want to miss this moment. 

Scripture reminds us that “the harvest is plentiful” (Matthew 9:37). The need is great, and the opportunity is now. Together, we remain committed to stepping forward in faith, trusting God to continue what he has faithfully sustained for 210 years.

Update from Haiti: Faith and Resilience Amid Crisis

Haiti continues to endure a profound and prolonged crisis that has deeply affected every aspect of national life. For several years, insecurity has gripped the country, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where armed gangs control large areas. Daily acts of violence, including kidnappings, killings, and sexual assaults, have become a tragic reality for many Haitians.

Between January 2025 and March 2026, official figures report that approximately 5,519 people lost their lives as a result of this violence. The humanitarian consequences are equally devastating. More than one million residents of Port-au-Prince have been forced to flee their homes, many of which have been looted or destroyed. Displaced families now live in overcrowded camps, often under makeshift tents and in extremely difficult conditions. The instability has disrupted nearly every sector of society. Schools struggle to function consistently, frequently closing due to protests or insecurity. Economic activity is severely limited, and daily life is marked by uncertainty and fear.

“Words alone cannot adequately describe the crisis that has persisted in Haiti for over 40 years since the end of the Duvalier dictatorship in 1986. Since then, the country has experienced continual political and social upheaval, and the state has been severely weakened,” shared Magda N. Victor, General Secretary of the Haitian Bible Society (HBS).

 A Mission of Hope in Difficult Times

Amid these challenges, the Haitian Bible Society continues its works to fulfil its mission, working tirelessly to make the Word of God more accessible. “Despite the evident dangers, we cannot remain idle; we rely on the protection of our God, who has never abandoned us and who guides us. We have been able to carry out programs distributing Bibles and biblical materials in camps for displaced persons and in schools, reaching those most affected by the crisis,” said Magda N. Victor.

Through its “End to End” program, the Haitian Bible Society has expanded its presence beyond the capital, organising listening sessions and screenings of the Jesus Film. These initiatives are especially impactful for individuals who are visually impaired or unable to read, ensuring that no one is excluded from engaging with Scripture.

In addition to spiritual outreach, the Haitian Bible Society has addressed urgent humanitarian needs. Trauma-healing sessions have been conducted for victims of violence, offering emotional and spiritual support. Following Cyclone Melissa, the Bible Society provided food kits and Bibles to 500 families in the southern and southeastern regions of the country, demonstrating a holistic approach to care.

Recognition and Gratitude

The impact of this work has not gone unnoticed. Across Haiti, churches and Christian organisations have recognised the Haitian Bible Society’s faithful service and have honoured its contribution to communities facing extraordinary hardship.

A Testimony of Faith

Despite the immense challenges facing Haiti, the Haitian Bible Society remains steadfast. Its work is sustained by the prayers, solidarity, and faithful support of partners around the world. In the midst of violence and uncertainty, there is a deep sense of gratitude for God’s continued protection over the organisation, its staff, and its mission. Echoing the words of the First Book of Samuel 7:12, Magda n. Victor gives thanks for all the support received throughout the years from the UBS Fellowship:

“I give heartfelt thanks to God and to all our partners in the Fraternity whose prayers, solidarity, and faithful support make this ministry possible. In the midst of violence, instability, and immense human suffering, we testify with gratitude that God has protected the Haitian Bible Society, its Board, its staff, and its ministry.

“Thus far the LORD has helped us.”(1 Samuel 7:12) Like Samuel raising Ebenezer as a testimony of God’s help, we raise this same testimony today: through every trial, the Lord has been our protector and our help.”

TWO KINGDOMS THEORY AND CHRISTIAN RESPONSIBILITY IN THE PRESENT CONTEXT

The doctrine of the “Two Kingdoms,” articulated by the great reformer Martin Luther (On Temporal Authority: To What Extent It Should Be Obeyed, 1923) remains one of the most insightful frameworks for many theologians after him, for understanding the relationship between faith and public life. Far from encouraging withdrawal from society, Luther’s teaching provides a balanced theological vision that enables Christians to live faithfully both as citizens of God’s Kingdom and as responsible members of earthly society.

Understanding the Two Kingdoms: Luther proposed that God governs the world in two distinct but related ways:

1. The Spiritual Kingdom: This is God’s rule through the Gospel, Scripture, and grace. Here, Christ reigns in the hearts of believers, bringing:

• Salvation
• Forgiveness of sins
• Transformation of life

This kingdom is not enforced by law or power but by faith and the Word of God.

2. The Temporal Kingdom: This refers to God’s governance of the world through:

• Governments
• Laws
• Institutions

Its purpose is to maintain order, justice, and peace in our challenging world. Authority in this realm is necessary to restrain evil and promote societal well-being. Luther insisted that both kingdoms are under God’s sovereignty, yet they operate differently. Confusing them leads either to theocracy, forcing faith through power, or absolute secularism with complete separation of faith and government.

In a richly diverse and plural society like India, the Two Kingdoms framework of Martin Luther offers a meaningful lens for Christian engagement in socio-political life. Christians are called to live faithfully as citizens of God’s Kingdom while participating responsibly in a multi-religious democracy, recognizing that faith must never be imposed through political means, but expressed through witness, Scripture, and love. While Scripture calls for respect toward governing authorities (Romans 13), this is not blind obedience; rather, it includes a prophetic responsibility to speak truth with humility, advocate for justice, and stand with the marginalized. At the same time, believers must guard against the misuse of religion for political power or division, upholding integrity, reconciliation, and truth in all public engagement.

The Two Kingdoms vision does not separate faith from public life but calls Christians to serve God faithfully in both Church and society, proclaiming God’s Word, nurturing spiritual growth, and actively contributing to justice, peace, and nation-building. For the Bible Society of India, this finds expression in taking Scripture into the public square, where God’s Word shapes both personal faith and public ethics, not by coercion, but through values, character, and responsible engagement. In contexts of social tension, especially due to political differences, Christians are further called to be peacemakers, bridge-builders, and witnesses of Christ’s love. Ultimately, this theological vision reminds the Church that while it belongs to God’s eternal Kingdom, it is equally called to serve faithfully in the world that God deeply loves – engaging society with conviction, humility, and hope.

Partners Appreciation Program Report

The Bible Society of India, Dimapur Auxiliary held its 23^rd Annual Thanksgiving programme from 18^th -19^th April 2026 at Khabung Karong Baptist Church (PNBA). The programme was organized by BSI Senapati Branch. Rev. D. Stevenson, President BSI Senapati Branch welcomed all the delegates. About 1200 delegates attended the Annual Thanksgiving  celebration. On 18^th April 2026 Rev. Dr. N. Paphino, Auxiliary President brought the message of God. He first explained the coverage of Dimapur Auxiliary and then shared from 2 Tim 4:2 “preaching the word of God in reason and out of season.” There is continuity of preaching the Word of God. The BSI is not only providing the Word of God in the heart languages of the people, but continues to preach and teach so that the life of the people will be transformed in Christ through His living word.

On 19^th April 2026, Rev. L. Simon Raomai, NEITAC member and President of All Manipur Christian Organization brought the message to the large gathering.  He stated that Bible transforms life of individual, church and society. In the case of North East India all the credit should go to the Word of God in spiritual life, education and development.

The Word of God gives us comfort in despair, directs our path, strengthens in our weakness and restores our hope. Today, we are living in a chaotic situation. We need to go back to the Bible. We need to read, mediate, obey and live by it. Today, in Northeast India, almost all the people are Christians. Why do people fight and kill one another? If we want to live a peaceful life, we need to be rooted in Christ.

The Programme was graced by special songs from Khabung Karong Baptist Church Youth, BSI Kohima Branch, Taphou Naga Baptist Church and Miss Rakoveine. Appreciation Mementos were presented to the highest contribution of the Branches-BSI Kohima Branch, BSI Churachandpur Branch and BSI Mokokchung Branch. Individual highest contributions were also acknowledged.  We expressed our gratitude to Rev. Thangolu Rosu, Pastor of KKBC and his team for hosting BSI Annual Thanksgiving programme. Church Heads Thanksgiving Fellowship

Historical moments: In the history of Kerala Auxiliary, as part of the 70^th Jubilee celebrations, an exclusive event – a Thanksgiving Fellowship of Church Heads in Kerala was held at the Mar Thoma Church Headquarters, Tiruvalla, on 28^th April 2026. Around 60 leaders representing 18 denominations from across Kerala gathered for this significant occasion, reflecting the spirit of Christian unity and shared commitment to the ministry of God’s Word.

The meeting was presided over by the Auxiliary President, Most Rev. Dr. Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan. The inaugural address was delivered by His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, drawing from Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls” -ESV, emphasised that the Word of God has the power to dispel the darkness of the world—fear, domination, and insecurity—and that the Church is called to radiate this divine light across the world.

During the fellowship, the seven decades of the Bible Society’s ministry in Kerala were gratefully remembered. A special video presentation showcasing reports and photographs from this 70-year journey was screened, offering a moving reflection on God’s faithfulness through the years. Church leaders extended their greetings and enriched the gathering through their prayerful presence, encouragement, and leadership.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church for graciously hosting this programme. We also place on record our sincere appreciation for the dynamic and Spirit-led leadership of Most Rev. Dr. Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Very Rev. Mathew John (Senior Vicar General), Rev. Abey T. Mammen (Sabha Secretary), and all the esteemed office bearers and leaders of the Church. We thankfully acknowledge the committed support and leadership of Auxiliary Vice President- Rt. Rev. “Shri Pragnachakshu Mahila Seva Kunj” Blind Girl’s Hostel at Surendranagar

On April 6, 2026, a Braille Calendar and Braille Scripture Distribution Programme was held at the Blind Girls’ Hostel in Surendranagar. It was a truly blessed occasion for everyone who participated in the event. Nearly 138 visually impaired girls joyfully received God’s Word in Braille with gratitude and contentment, making the programme a meaningful and spiritually enriching experience for all. 

North India Translation Advisory Committee Meeting (NITAC) at Allahabad

It was a meaningful time of learning, encouragement, and fellowship during the NITAC Meeting held in Allahabad on April 23, 2026, with translation leaders and translators from various Northern India Auxiliaries. The gathering provided an enriching platform for sharing insights, strengthening collaboration, and reaffirming the shared commitment toward achieving the BSI Translation Roadmap 2036 in making God’s Word accessible to more language communities. 

New Branch Formation in Sankadiya and Study Bible Distribution for Pastors and Missionaries

On April 30, 2026, we were blessed to witness the formation of a new branch at Sankadiya in South Gujarat under the Gujarat Auxiliary. The gathering was filled with joy and fellowship as Bibles were distributed to 128 pastors and missionaries. It was a truly blessed occasion for all present to learn more about the ministry and mission of the Bible Society of India, strengthening their commitment to sharing God’s Word in their communities.

Collaboration in the World’s Most Linguistically Diverse Region: Asia Collaboration on Translation Gathering – A Summary

The Asia Collaboration on Translation (ACT) Gathering 2026 was held from March 18–20 in Bangkok, Thailand, hosted by the Thailand Bible Society. The event brought together Bible Societies, translation agencies, and ministry leaders from across the Asia Pacific region to strengthen partnerships and advance the Bible Translation Roadmap (BTR) goal of 1,200 first Bible translations by 2038, with nearly half expected to come from Asia Pacific.

Building upon the momentum of the 2025 Bali Affirmations, the gathering focused on intentional collaboration, generosity in partnership, and diversity in mission. Representatives from organisations such as UBS, SIL, Wycliffe Global Alliance, Seed Company, Spoken Worldwide, and others shared updates on translation ministries, literacy initiatives, oral Bible translation, and Scripture engagement efforts.

Country reports highlighted the ongoing translation work across the region. India reported more than 120 active translation projects, while countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Australia, and New Zealand shared both progress and challenges in making God’s Word accessible in diverse languages and contexts. Despite difficulties such as conflict, limited infrastructure, and shortage of trained consultants, translation ministries continue with resilience and faith.

A major emphasis of the gathering was strengthening inter-organisational collaboration, leadership development, and capacity building. Discussions focused on training future translation consultants, developing sustainable funding partnerships, and expanding innovative approaches such as Oral Bible Translation (OBT) and Sign Language translation. Participants also stressed the importance of integrating translation with literacy and Scripture engagement so that communities can meaningfully interact with God’s Word.

The gathering concluded with the drafting of the “Bangkok Affirmations,” reflecting the shared vision and commitment of participating organisations toward deeper cooperation and greater impact in Bible translation ministry. A closing worship service and communion reminded participants that Bible translation is ultimately God’s mission – transforming lives, communities, and nations through the power of Scripture.

• Give thanks for the Asia Collaboration on Translation gathering and the spirit of unity among Bible Societies and partner organisations working together toward the shared goal of Bible translation.
• Pray for continued progress toward the goal of 1,200 first Bible translations, especially across Asia Pacific, that remaining language communities will soon receive God’s Word.
• Ask God to raise up and equip a new generation of translation consultants, leaders, and trainers to address current shortages and sustain the mission for the future.
• Pray for teams working in difficult environments, such as areas affected by conflict, poverty, or isolation, that they will have protection, perseverance, and hope as they continue their work.
