HISTORY

The Tamil Nadu Auxiliary (Madras Auxiliary Bible Society) came into being on 20th May 1820. This is a culmination of several Bible groups already in operation in and around Chennai (Madras). Starting from the times of Ziegenbalg till the modern era, The Tamil Nadu (Madras) Auxiliary has always led the way in being at the forefront of facilitating Bible translation work. The first New Testament published in South Asia was Tamil in 1714 and Tamil Bible was published in 1728.

Tamil Nadu Auxiliary constitutes - Tamil Nadu State and two Union Territories
(Pondicherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands).

PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS:

The Auxiliary’s 110 branches functioning voluntarily all over Tamil Nadu support BSI work in distribution and fund raising. One of the leading and progressive arms of the BSI, the Tamil Nadu Auxiliary always figures among the top in their annual distribution and fund raising figures. Apart from Scripture items in Tamil language, this Auxiliary has been instrumental in producing Scriptures in Badaga and Sourashtra languages, and also Audio scriptures in Badaga, Toda, Irula and Sourashtra languages. We are also meeting the scripture needs of different people group in Andaman who speak 14 languages and people of Nicobar Islands who speak Nicobarese language. Last year we printed 5000 Bibles in Nicobarese languages and sent them to Car Nicobar Island.
