BIBLE SOCIETY OF INDIA - ORISSA AUXILIARY

.

HISTORY

The Scripture Distribution Center which became Bible Depot later on was functioning at Cuttack from 1943 as an extended arm of Calcutta Auxiliary work. This Depot gained full fledged status as Orissa Auxiliary in 1983. The year 1992 saw the Auxiliary moving its operations into its own building, the purpose built Bible House.

PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS:

Orissa has seen publication of Scriptures not only in Oriya, the main language of the state, but also in several tribal languages like Sora, Ho, Kui and Mundari. Rising to the demand for provision of Scriptures for the unlettered., the Auxiliary facilitated production of Audio Scriptures in Oriya, Sora and Juango languages.

The vibrancy of the Church's presence and the witness to God's Word provided two people from Orissa to the top leadership of BSI. They are Mr. Premanand Mahanty and Dr. B. K. Pramanik, General Secretaries.

Orissa also saw in the martyrdom of Dr. Graham Staines, along with his sons Philip and Timothy in early 1999, a translator of Ho (Oriya) New Testament, the strong witness of Christian presence in love, forgiveness and acceptance.
