HOPE

“Hear my prayer, O God;
   don't turn away from my plea!
Listen to me and answer me;
   I am worn out by my worries.
I am terrified by the threats of my enemies,
  crushed by the oppression of the wicked.
They bring trouble on me;
  they are angry with me and hate me.
I am terrified,
   and the terrors of death crush me.
I am gripped by fear and trembling; I am overcome with horror. I wish I had wings, like a dove. I would fly away and find rest.
I would fly far away and make my home in the desert.
I would quickly find myself a shelter from the raging wind and the storm.”

Psalm 55: 1-8

IS THERE A HOPE?
This passage is a poem in the Bible talking of life’s problems, which make people to cry out in despair, especially when they realize that they are helpless with no hope around. “Why should it happen to me - unemployment, sickness, financial crisis, family problems… ?”. This is the question we often ask ourselves when we face problems in life. We feel like running away and hiding from all these problems. It is a natural reaction to be angry in such situations, especially, when things happen which we do not like.
Is there a hope in a situation like this? YES when we turn to God and seek His help. It is God’s desire to help us in situations like this. The song writer tells of his experience when he sought God.

GOD ANSWERS:
“I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me; he freed me from all my fears. Find out for yourself how good the Lord is. Happy are those who find safety with him.” (Psalm 34: 4, 8)

Be assured that God is faithful to all his promises and he will be near you when you cry unto him in faith. Your cry will turn into joyful songs of praise as the song writer discovered when he turned to God.

“Why am I so sad ? Why am I so troubled ? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my saviour and my God.” (Psalm 43: 5)

The ‘Good News’ in the Bible is that people can have direct access to God and live a life under the shadow and protection of the Almighty God, free from unnecessary fears. “For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” Let us be bold and then say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me ?” (Hebrews 13: 5b-6)

HOW TO APPROACH GOD?
When we seek God, the Bible tells us to be humble and also to ask his forgiveness for all our wrongdoings(sins). In the same way, we must also forgive others who might have done something against us.

“…The scripture says, “God resists the proud, but shows favour to the humble.” Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.”

“When you pray and ask for something, believe that you have received it, and you will be given whatever you ask for. And when you stand and pray, forgive anything you may have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive the wrongs you have done.”
                                                                                          (1Peter 5: 5b-7; Mark 11: 24b-25)

THERE IS HOPE:
The Bible tells that Lord Jesus is indeed the true hope for all because He came to give real hope to the hopeless and the oppressed.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me (Jesus), because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.” (Luke 4: 16-19)

The path that we tread appears to be a hopeless end; but with Lord Jesus there is an endless hope. When we put our trust in him, we can say as the song writer says in the Bible.

“Give praise to the Lord; he has heard my cry for help. The Lord protects and defends me; I trust in him. He gives me help and makes me glad; I praise him with joyful songs.”
                                                              (Psalm 28: 6, 7)
